چکیده

Introduction ‘Count genes, not calories’ was the title of a nutrition article in the Financial Times of Friday, 13 June 2003. It referred to the results of the Human Genome Project and the discovery of our 35 000 genes, whose functions are currently both known and unknown. It also mentioned the study that painstakingly and systematically analysed all 17 000 genes of the Caenorhabditis elegans worm to see which ones were involved in fat storage [1]. The result was 305 genes whose inactivation reduced body fat and 112 whose loss led to extra fat. As the titles of these articles indicate, it is clear that more emphasis should and will be focused on the importance of genetic background in body weight regulation. Putting on weight is the end result of a highly complex and still largely unknown system, almost every step of which can be modified according to our genes.

Eating rate of commonly consumed foods promotes food and energy intake

We investigated the eating rate of commonly consumed foods and the associations with food intake and macronutrient composition. Ingestion time (s) of 50 g of 45 foods was measured to assess eating rate (g/min), after which ad libitum food intake (g) was measured. Thirteen men and 24 women (aged 23.3 (SD 3.4)y, BMI 21.7 (SD 1.7)kg/m(2)) participated, each testing 7 foods in separate sessions. We...

Food and macronutrient intake of elite kenyan distance runners.

The food and macronutrient intake of elite Kenyan runners was compared to recommendations for endurance athletes. Estimated energy intake (EI: 2987 +/- 293 kcal; mean +/- standard deviation) was lower than energy expenditure (EE: 3605 +/- 119 kcal; P < 0.001) and body mass (BM: 58.9 +/- 2.7 kg vs. 58.3 +/- 2.6 kg; P < 0.001) was reduced over the 7-d intense training period. Diet was high in car...

Balancing macronutrient intake in a mammalian carnivore: disentangling the influences of flavour and nutrition

There is a large body of research demonstrating that macronutrient balancing is a primary driver of foraging in herbivores and omnivores, and more recently, it has been shown to occur in carnivores. However, the extent to which macronutrient selection in carnivores may be influenced by organoleptic properties (e.g. flavour/aroma) remains unknown. Here, we explore the roles of nutritional and he...

Influence of glycemic index/load on glycemic response, appetite, and food intake in healthy humans.

OBJECTIVE High glycemic index (GI)/load (GL) diets reportedly enhance appetite and promote positive energy balance. Support for this hypothesis stems largely from acute feeding trials and longer-term studies lacking control over the macronutrient composition and palatability of test foods. This study evaluated the effects of consuming high- and low-GI/GL meals, matched on macronutrient composit...
